City University of Hong Kong

If you don’t feel ‘full’ enough with the mental nutrition you can get within HKBU, if you are not satisfied with seminars and workshops related to culture so far, I strongly recommend you to follow the news of the Chinese Civilization Centre at CityU. Most lectures are open to public including students from other Universities.

There are varieties of  on campus lectures and workshops by visiting professionals this semester. You may find some specific topics that interest you via this link (http://www.cciv.cityu.edu.hk/content.php?p=all&type=all). What’s more, the website also provides you with the archived video clips of past events.

In terms of poetry, there is also one relevant lecture this year: A Visit to the Footprints of Poets in Tang Dynasty (in Putonghua), from 16:00 to 17:50 on 28 Nov. The introduction of the Japanese lecturer can be found at http://www.cciv.cityu.edu.hk/content.php?p=info&id=seiichi_uchida.

In addition, according to my experience, you’d better research a bit about those lecturers. What’s more important, remember to get there earlier than the proposed start time of every event.  The reason is, as far as I know, the centre usually doesn’t offer the service of seat reservation in advance.

As a ‘neighbor’, why not go to CityU to share the learning resource and tell your friends at CityU some good lectures at HKBU?

Have you ever read any poems from Arab world before? This time CUHK has invited Adonis, a poet from Syria and organized workshop, recitation and sharing sessions. You may click here for further information and inquiries.

Adonis is recognized as one of the most important poets and theorists of literature in the Arab world.

Shot by Bei Dao, a Chinese Modern Poet, shared by Prof. Chow Po Chong via his Sina Weibo.

Currently there are still two ongoing events:

17 October – Poetry Recitation
Time: 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 1, Esther Lee Building, Chung Chi College, CUHK

20 October – Meeting the Readers (Symposium, sharing & autograph session)
Time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Venue: Tsimshatsui Book Centre – The Commercial Press, Shops B1007-1010, B1/F., Miramar Shopping Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui

If you love literature, or if you are a big fan of certain writer, I bet you would not like to miss a good chance to get close to literature masters. The program I’d like to promote is International Writer Workshop. There are plenty of public and on campus activities of Visiting Writers during this October and November. You may find more details on the activity list via this link (http://iww.hkbu.edu.hk/index.php?fl=activities_vw_2012),posters and etc.

In terms of gaining more knowledge of poetry, to compare works by poets from different countries would be a smart choice. Here I give you the list of poets among the visiting writers this year:

Ouyang Jianghe (Mainland China, 1956 -)
Nguyen Phan Que Mai (Vietnam, 1973- )
Meena Kandasamy (India, 1984 – )

In addition, you’d better research a bit about those visiting writers through the brief introduction after your decision of enrollment. Of course, you might have already known that, the best way is to borrow their publications from the library to go through the works to “know” them better.

Let’s take action and dive into the deep-sea called “literature”!

I believe that these activities deserve to be taken a glance at. Later I’ll keep an eye on the news of these activities and might share my experience enrolling in the Workshop of Fiction Writing last semester.

Hong Kong International Literary Festival 2012 has just opened!

This festival to celebrate everything the written word and many other literary events are going to be offered in this October. Organized and coördinated by Hong Kong International Literary Festival Limited, this program includes winners of the world’s leading literary prizes. Maybe later I could take part in some activities and give you further introduction.

You may find more information for the program details or ticket booking via www.festival.org.hk/programme if you are interested in it.
